C\u2019est donc \u00e0 15 heures que le gang de New York a envoy\u00e9 du son sur la Main Stage profitant ainsi de l\u2019acoustique que nous vous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 tant vant\u00e9e. Avec un frontman aux allures de Brian May, un bassiste qui joue avec le pied sur le retour et un guitariste soliste muni d\u2019une Flying V, ces souverains du riff appartiennent tr\u00e8s clairement \u00e0 la cat\u00e9gorie de formations ayant le potentiel de rassembler les bourrins, les hippies et les autres tribus de festivaliers pour lesquels le son vintage n\u2019est pas r\u00e9dhibitoire. C\u2019est con parce qu\u2019\u00e0 part les acharn\u00e9s (dont nous sommes), le public est plut\u00f4t clairsem\u00e9 au moment o\u00f9 les Ricains envoient un set qui n\u2019est pas sans nous rappeler agr\u00e9ablement ces bons vieux Black Sabbath. Cette performance a tout de suite plac\u00e9 la barre assez haute pour ce samedi soir qui s\u2019annon\u00e7ait fi\u00e9vreux en d\u00e9butant avec \u00ab Poignard \u00bb issu de \u00ab Verdigris \u00bb sorti il y a quelques ann\u00e9es sur Tee Pee Records, qui n\u2019est pas la bo\u00eete la plus inint\u00e9ressantes pour propager du bon son.<\/p>\n<p><a t\u00f4t pour certains car le public n&rsquo;est pas encore au complet dans l&rsquo;enceinte du fest : la journ\u00e9e d&rsquo;hier a d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment laiss\u00e9 des traces et les corps furent probablement difficiles \u00e0 bouger en cette heure avanc\u00e9e de&#8230; euh&#8230; l&rsquo;apr\u00e8s-midi. \u00c7a n&#8217;emp\u00eache pas plusieurs centaines de personnes de se masser dans la cour du Biergarten de l&rsquo;Arena pour assister au set tr\u00e8s attendu des am\u00e9ricains, sur le pont du Hoppetosse. D\u00e8s le soundcheck, l&rsquo;ambiance n&rsquo;est pas \u00e0 la prise de t\u00eate, avec des essais micro et batterie sur \u00ab\u00a0Enter Sandman\u00a0\u00bb, une chanson de White Zombie&#8230;\u00a0 On aurait certes appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 de voir le groupe en configuration plus traditionnelle type \u00ab\u00a0club\u00a0\u00bb (lights, grosse sono, etc&#8230;) mais l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience de voir l&rsquo;un de nos groupes favoris dans ce contexte barr\u00e9 nous met en joie. Fuzz, le frontman du groupe, monte sur sc\u00e8ne avec une cagoule blanches et une v\u00e9ritable faux en guise de pied de micro &#8211; un objet fort contondant qui a d\u00fb rendre dubitatif le charg\u00e9 de bagages \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport de Berlin&#8230; Les gaillards rentrent dans leur set avec une belle \u00e9nergie et leur proto-doom old school fait mouche tr\u00e8s vite &#8211; si l&rsquo;on en juge par les mines b\u00e9ates du public. Fuzz m\u00e8ne la danse, toujours sur la corde entre 1er degr\u00e9 ironique et second degr\u00e9, est \u00e0 fond dans son trip, comme lorsqu&rsquo;il introduit \u00ab\u00a0Brave the Grave\u00a0\u00bb avec un <em>\u00ab\u00a0Quelle belle journ\u00e9e, tandis que le soleil brille&#8230; et que vous contemplez un cadavre d\u00e9chiquet\u00e9&#8230;\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em> Les meilleurs titres du quintette d\u00e9filent et provoquent d&rsquo;aimables headbang dans l&rsquo;assistance en bas du Hoppetosse : \u00ab\u00a0Black Leather\u00a0\u00bb, un gros \u00ab\u00a0Tremble\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Smoke and Lightning\u00a0\u00bb en final&#8230; N&rsquo;en jetez plus ! joue hors de son pays que pour la deuxi\u00e8me fois aujourd&rsquo;hui ! Dire que \u00e7a se voit serait aussi faux que malhonn\u00eate : m\u00eame si le soundcheck semble un peu lent (d&rsquo;o\u00f9 un d\u00e9marrage en retard)d\u00e8s que le set commence la mise en place s&rsquo;av\u00e8re bien carr\u00e9e musicalement. En revanche, c\u00f4t\u00e9 aisance sc\u00e9nique, tout est plut\u00f4t timide. Le niveau d&rsquo;anglais juste correct d&rsquo;Alina, la chanteuse\/clavier\/percussionniste, ainsi qu&rsquo;une timidit\u00e9 apparente, n&rsquo;aident pas. Musicalement, on est dans un psych-rock pas d\u00e9agr\u00e9able, qui baigne le public dans une torpeur ouat\u00e9e pas d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able, avec quelques passages plus costauds et bien trippants. Pas le concert du si\u00e8cle, mais une petite d\u00e9couverte sympathique d&rsquo;un groupe \u00e0 surveiller.<\/p>\n<p><a Ces diablotins originaires de la Cit\u00e9 des Anges pratiquent un rock des plus \u00e9nergiques fortement influenc\u00e9 par la musique qui a pris son essor \u00e0 quelques centaines de miles au nord de leur m\u00e9gapole dans la fameuse Bay Area. Le thrash d\u2019antan de Metallica constitue une des influences majeures de ces agit\u00e9s qui d\u00e9roulent un set sorti du pass\u00e9 alors qu\u2019une partie du public lui fait front allong\u00e9e dans le confort cosy de la terrasse surplombant les tables des bars. Reste au groupe \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;est pas que decorum et effets de manche&#8230; ce qu&rsquo;il fait, haut la main. Le quintette tient impeccablement la sc\u00e8ne et ses titres font un carton aupr\u00e8s d&rsquo;un public conquis d\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res notes de l&rsquo;intro sur le sautillant \u00ab\u00a0Astral Seer\u00a0\u00bb. \u00c9videmment c&rsquo;est son dernier opus qui est mis en valeur ce soir, avec des titres comme \u00ab\u00a0Repentance\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0The Golden City of Semyra\u00a0\u00bb qui font bien vite monter la temp\u00e9rature. Les plans un peu grandiloquents sur disque passent parfaitement l&rsquo;\u00e9preuve de la sc\u00e8ne, avec des arrangements bienvenus, des rythmiques adapt\u00e9es (voir l&rsquo;excellent \u00ab\u00a0Star Riders\u00a0\u00bb un peu acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 et encore plus charg\u00e9 en groove que l&rsquo;original)&#8230; Le chant de Tommy Alexandersson, impeccable de bout en bout, est l&rsquo;un des points distinctifs de la musique du groupe scandinave, et apporte au heavy rock vintage du groupe ce petit plus qui le rend si int\u00e9ressant. Les cavalcades de guitares, les claviers&#8230; tout est en place et les 45 minutes d\u00e9filent sans que l&rsquo;on ne voit passer le temps&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a embauch\u00e9 celle qui fut l&rsquo;une des plus belles femmes de la plan\u00e8te rock \u00e0 moustache se radine devant la foule sans avoir pionc\u00e9 (selon leur frontman <span class=\"text_exposed_show\">Josh Landau<\/span>) depuis leur performance londonienne : \u00e7a promet ! Nous avions d\u00e9j\u00e0 assist\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques performances de la bande originaire de Californie et \u00e9tions assez excit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de voir Corey Parks envoyer du lourd \u00e0 la basse avec ces deux camarades de jeu qui lui arrivent sous les aisselles. Question d\u00e9bauche sur sc\u00e8ne, The Shrine et leur nouvelle recrue sont clairement tr\u00e8s tr\u00e8s forts !\u00a0 A l&rsquo;issue de ce set m\u00e9morable &#8211; qui vit la bassiste jouer contre le public mass\u00e9 \u00e0 la barri\u00e8re, et son leader se balancer dans le public lors d\u2019un titre &#8211; notre seule d\u00e9ception sera de constater les ravages que la dame du groupe s\u2019\u00e9tait inflig\u00e9 (la vie est dure). Inarr\u00eatable sur sc\u00e8ne malgr\u00e9 le manque de sommeil, les \u00c9tasuniens ont explos\u00e9 leur temps de jeu pour le plus grand plaisir de ses inconditionnels \u00e0 fond dans ce show d\u2019excellente facture. Landau, avec ses airs de petit loubard des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, est un performer hors-pairs et ses acolytes d\u00e9ploient une rythmique imparable ; l\u2019exercice est clairement r\u00e9ussi et m\u00eame les compos r\u00e9centes comme \u00ab Destroyers \u00bb passent impeccablement l\u2019examen du live, malgr\u00e9 le cr\u00e9neau horaire particuli\u00e8rement haut sur l\u2019affiche durant lequel The Shrine a d\u00fb envoyer devant le backdrop \u00e0 son effigie. Une mention sp\u00e9ciale pour ce trio qui a su occuper tout l\u2019espace physique \u00e0 sa disposition afin de nous en foutre plein les mirettes.<\/p>\n<p><a d\u00e9but de l&rsquo;apr\u00e8s-midi ne d\u00e9rape pas, mais ne se rattrape pas non plus. On assiste donc \u00e0 la fin du soundcheck du trio grec pendant de longues minutes avant que le concert ne commence&#8230; et pour un d\u00e9but rat\u00e9, on fait difficilement plus mal : John Vagenas demande \u00e0 arr\u00eater le titre au bout de 30 secondes ! Malgr\u00e9 un soundcheck \u00e0 rallonge, sa basse n&rsquo;est m\u00eame pas accord\u00e9e ! Le concert recommence donc, et l&rsquo;on se rend compte que c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00e9nergie, il est difficile de suivre The Shrine qui a bien chamboul\u00e9 le public. L&rsquo;intro pourtant assez dynamique du set ne suffit pas \u00e0 renverser l&rsquo;ambiance. Il faudra, comme souvent avec eux, que le groupe lance son classique \u00ab\u00a0On the Silver Line\u00a0\u00bb pour commencer \u00e0 se mettre le public dans la poche &#8211; et \u00e0 partir de l\u00e0, il joue sur du velours. Sans surprise, John Delias reste statique sur quasiment tout le set, regardant alternativement ses coll\u00e8gues, son p\u00e9dalier ou son instrument, mais ne s&rsquo;adresse jamais au public. Heureusement, l&rsquo;autre John, Vagenas, est de plus en plus \u00e0 l&rsquo;aise dans son r\u00f4le de chanteur \/ frontman et contribue un peu plus \u00e0 l&rsquo;interaction avec le public. Mais c&rsquo;est la musique qui remporte le pompon, et de ce c\u00f4t\u00e9, le trio de Thessalonique ne manque pas de r\u00e9pondant. M\u00eame si ce n&rsquo;est pas le concert le plus marquant du groupe, que l&rsquo;on a beaucoup vu l&rsquo;an dernier notamment, il reste l&rsquo;un des meilleurs dans son genre, et ce set impeccable Fond\u00e9e alors que Dozer \u00e9tait encore en activit\u00e9, cette formation ins\u00e8re les riffs imparables du quatuor des temps anciens venu de Borl\u00e4nge \u00e0 des compositions de heavy rock plut\u00f4t tr\u00e8s abordables. Compos\u00e9 de zicos fort rompus \u00e0 l\u2019exercice sc\u00e9nique pour un line-up d\u00e9sormais bien stabilis\u00e9, le groupe m\u00e8ne, depuis la deuxi\u00e8me d\u00e9cennie de ce mill\u00e9naire, une carri\u00e8re exemplaire qui les voit se produire un peu partout sur le globe pour le plus grand bonheur de ses \u2013 tr\u00e8s &#8211; nombreux inconditionnels. Nous sommes fans, les Allemands sont fans et toute la population pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 ce festival est d\u00e9finitivement fan. L\u2019exercice semble gagn\u00e9 d\u2019avance devant un parterre conquis, mais quid de l\u2019ex\u00e9cution ? Ca d\u00e9bute tr\u00e8s fort avec \u00ab Sweet Is The Sound \u00bb issu du petit dernier \u00ab Hear The Rivers \u00bb qui est un br\u00fblot impeccable propice \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9talage des hautes comp\u00e9tences de Tommi, \u00e0 la guitare (qui arbore fi\u00e8rement un t-shirt de ses compatriotes de The Hellacopters), des prouesses vocales d\u2019Arvid (une b\u00eate de sc\u00e8ne) ainsi que de la robustesse de la section rythmique (Hans \u00e0 la basse et Sebastian \u00e0 la batterie). M\u00eame si nous avons assist\u00e9 par le pass\u00e9 \u00e0 moults shows de Greenleaf, nous ne bouderons pas notre plaisir durant l\u2019heure que le quatuor avait \u00e0 disposition pour nous enchanter. Extrayant le meilleur de ses productions r\u00e9centes avec les tueries live que sont \u00ab Ocean Deep \u00bb (sur \u00ab Trails And Passes \u00bb), \u00ab Pilgrims \u00bb (sur \u00ab Rise Above The Meadow \u00bb) ou \u00ab Oh My Bones \u00bb (sur le petit dernier), Greenleaf a conquis Berlin id\u00e9alement plac\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019heure du journal du soir, apr\u00e8s nous avoir fait le coup de \u00ab\u00a0<em>vous-en-voulez-une-autre<\/em> ?\u00a0\u00bb gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une ex\u00e9cution sans faille et un sens de la m\u00e9lodie admirablement retranscrit en live. On se pose donc tranquille dans le Biergarten pour voir le grand barbu encha\u00eener seul sur sc\u00e8ne des morceaux issus des diff\u00e9rents pans de sa carri\u00e8re ou de ses groupes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s, le tout arrang\u00e9&#8230; \u00e0 sa sauce ! Chansons raccourcies, acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9es, chant souvent beugl\u00e9&#8230; on est habitu\u00e9s ! Leur placement sur l\u2019affiche annon\u00e7ait un peu la couleur et en grands amateurs de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 que nous sommes, nous nous r\u00e9jouissons \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de les voir rentrer dans le dictionnaire afin de pouvoir briller au Scrabble. Alors que Nick Oliveri termine son set acoustique \u00e0 l\u2019air libre, nous nous pressons \u00e0 l\u2019heure pour capter quelques clich\u00e9s, mais malheureusement le show ne d\u00e9marre pas rapidement (\u00e7a nous permet de discuter un peu avec nos homologues et de constater qu\u2019avec les ann\u00e9es, cette manifestation ratisse de plus en plus large question couverture presse). Le retard de 10 minutes accumul\u00e9 depuis quelques groupes d\u00e9j\u00e0 n\u2019est toujours pas r\u00e9sorb\u00e9 et, pire encore, il va augmenter avec la formation de Tokyo, active depuis quelques ann\u00e9es d\u00e9j\u00e0 puisqu\u2019elle va d\u00e9buter avec une vingtaine de minutes de d\u00e9calage avec le running order, apr\u00e8s un dernier soundcheck peu \u00e9nergique (ils avaient un sushi de son). Les r\u00e9glages effectu\u00e9s, c&rsquo;est group\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019avant de la sc\u00e8ne (sympa le pit photo du coup) un peu comme des babas cools autour d\u2019un feu de camp (la cithare soulignant l\u2019aspect Woodstock revival de ce set), qu&rsquo;ils envoient un set brillant et magnifiquement mis en valeur par un son nickel ainsi que des lights donnant au public un rendu de clapotis marins. La foule a ondul\u00e9 d\u2019un bout \u00e0 l\u2019autre de la salle et du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin du set en parfaite osmose avec les musiciens plut\u00f4t orient\u00e9s sur l\u2019instrumental, avec \u00e7a o\u00f9 l\u00e0 des incursions de voix. Au final, les Japonais ont fait partie des groupes qui ont compt\u00e9 lors de cette \u00e9dition avec leur style tr\u00e8s planant lorgnant vers le psych\u00e9d\u00e9lique : les gens avec qui nous \u00e9lectrique lors de la mont\u00e9e sur sc\u00e8ne de Fu Manchu est loin de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9. Venus expr\u00e8s de Californie pour les 2 concerts des Desertfest, le groupe est tr\u00e8s attendu ce soir. Pile \u00e0 l&rsquo;heure (en bon professionnels, ils ont rattrap\u00e9 le retard cumul\u00e9 cet apr\u00e8s-midi) , le quatuor monte sur sc\u00e8ne et ressort symboliquement une bonne vieille p\u00e9pite au riff imparable, \u00ab\u00a0Squash that Fly\u00a0\u00bb, sous les meilleurs augures. Scott Hill est d\u00e9cha\u00een\u00e9, headbanguant \u00e0 la moindre. Et le reste d\u00e9file ensuite, comme une d\u00e9monstration. Les hits sont l\u00e0 et bien l\u00e0 (des versions \u00e9normes de \u00ab\u00a0Evil Eye\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Mongoose\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0King of the Road\u00a0\u00bb&#8230; on ne peut pas toutes les citer !) et quelques raret\u00e9s sont d\u00e9terr\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;image du punky \u00ab\u00a0I Can&rsquo;t Hear You\u00a0\u00bb ou du vieux \u00ab\u00a0Push Button Magic\u00a0\u00bb. Compl\u00e8tement \u00e9tranger au principe de d\u00e9marche promotionnelle, Fu Manchu ne fait m\u00eame pas l&rsquo;effort de sur-repr\u00e9senter sa derni\u00e8re production (pas plus de un ou deux extraits de \u00ab\u00a0Clone of the Universe\u00a0\u00bb) ni m\u00eame la r\u00e9cente r\u00e9\u00e9dition de son \u00ab\u00a0Eatin&rsquo; Dust\u00a0\u00bb (deux pauvres extraits seulement). Ils sont l\u00e0 pour foutre le feu, pas pour vendre des disques ! Les californiens sont \u00e0 l&rsquo;aise sur sc\u00e8ne, Scott Hill occupe tout l&rsquo;espace qui lui est laiss\u00e9 disponible et abat \u00e0 la cha\u00eene les gros riffs que l&rsquo;on attend tous, tandis que Bob Balch dispense ses lead et soli avec classe et talent. Et c\u00f4t\u00e9 rythmique, vous connaissez la musique&#8230; Le set est massif, la set list est impeccable (des classiques, des titres plus rares, une alternance de titres plus ou moins nerveux,&#8230; il y en a pour tout le monde), l&rsquo;interpr\u00e9tation est sans faille&#8230; Franchement, on sort de ce set non pas surpris (on les a vus ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, on ne s&rsquo;attendait pas vraiment \u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9\u00e7us) mais avec la confirmation que Fu Manchu est devenu un gros groupe de sc\u00e8ne, d&rsquo;une efficacit\u00e9 imparable.
