La programmation des 6 sc\u00e8nes du festival avait follement excit\u00e9 la plan\u00e8te rock ces derniers mois et le moment \u00e9tait \u2013 enfin \u2013 venu d\u2019aller se frotter \u00e0 la version 14 du Hellfest. La configuration de notre sc\u00e8ne de pr\u00e9dilection, la fameuse Valley, n\u2019a gu\u00e8re \u00e9volu\u00e9 depuis l\u2019an pass\u00e9 tout comme la configuration g\u00e9n\u00e9rale du fest. Nous avions quitt\u00e9 les lieux sous les assauts d\u2019Amenra en 2018 et la programmation de ce groupe (pas franchement stoner) donnait un avant-go\u00fbt de la nouvelle coloration musicale qu\u2019allait un peu prendre notre sc\u00e8ne de pr\u00e9dilection cette ann\u00e9e. L\u2019ouverture d\u2019esprit d\u00e9j\u00e0 amorc\u00e9e \u00e0 doses hom\u00e9opathiques par le pass\u00e9 allait prendre de l\u2019ampleur&#8230; et ce n\u2019est pas l\u2019annulation de derni\u00e8re minute de Manowar qui allait nous g\u00e2cher notre fest !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong><em>*** Notre video-report : le jour 1 du Hellfest en quelques minutes avec entre autres des extraits live de tous les concerts ! ***<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Puua3GQSyUo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The NECROMANCERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quoi de mieux pour commencer ce Hellfest qu\u2019un groupe invoquant Satan \u00e0 presque chacun de ses morceaux ? Les fran\u00e7ais qui ont parcouru le vieux continent en long et en large ces derniers mois trouvent logiquement leur place sous la Valley, et montrent tr\u00e8s vite les vertus de cette exp\u00e9rience live &#8211; sur sc\u00e8ne, c&rsquo;est du solide ! Ouvrant sur leur classique \u00ab\u00a0Salem Girl\u00a0\u00bb sous une tente presque comble (fait notable s&rsquo;il en est, car il n&rsquo;est que 10h30) The Necromancers ont t\u00f4t fait de galvaniser la foule : malgr\u00e9 un son parfois un peu mal balanc\u00e9 il n&rsquo;y aura aucune d\u00e9fection dans les rangs, bien au contraire. Musicalement, le quatuor emprunte au doom et sort du lot avec son go\u00fbt d&rsquo;entre-deux avec des sonorit\u00e9s tr\u00e8s Stoner et d&rsquo;autres plus Southern voire Hard Rock. La voix rocailleuse de Tom porte le majestueux \u00ab\u00a0Erzebeth\u00a0\u00bb sur presque un quart d&rsquo;heure, avant que le groupe ne termine par son autre morceau embl\u00e9matique, \u00ab\u00a0Black Marble House\u00a0\u00bb, en version heavy bien rod\u00e9e sur la route, pour le plus grand plaisir du public (qui compte pas mal de fans qui chantent les paroles). Un set solide, efficace, et ma\u00eetris\u00e9 de bout en bout.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/desert-rock.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_5815.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" SUN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Quartet de Cincinnati vient faire pleuvoir le feu sur sc\u00e8ne d&rsquo;entr\u00e9e de jeu. C&rsquo;est une attaque en r\u00e8gle qui fout des gifles aux festivaliers. On aurait pu craindre une certaine mollesse des gars au vu des compos du dernier album <em>Old Gods<\/em> mais il n\u2019en est rien. Le guitariste Casey Beagle larsen \u00e0 mort, le gars n&rsquo;est pas venu pour enfiler des perles, pas moins d&rsquo;ailleurs que ses coreligionnaires. Leur jeu est plein d&rsquo;un bonheur dansant qui va bient\u00f4t mettre tout le monde d\u2019accord. En effet \u00ab Old Gods\u00bb est le baril de poudre qui enflamme la fosse. Valley Of The Sun tape all\u00e8grement dans sa discographie reprenant son \u00ab Centaur Rodeo\u00bb des d\u00e9buts et cl\u00f4turant sur \u00ab Riding The Dunes\u00bb. Chaque morceau est taill\u00e9 pour la sc\u00e8ne et m\u00eame lorsque les titres sont plus lents, leur maturit\u00e9 s\u00e9duit totalement la foule ici amass\u00e9e. La Valley est presque comble et ce n\u2019est pas qu&rsquo;\u00e0 cause du soleil qui tape d\u00e9j\u00e0 dur dehors. Ce Hellfest d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment aura t\u00f4t fait de nous mettre dans le bain. Si Valley of the Sun ne sera pas pour nous LE groupe \u00e0 voir ce jour, il sera n\u00e9anmoins tr\u00e8s bien plac\u00e9 dans la liste de ceux qui auront marqu\u00e9 ce Fest. d\u00e9gueule de monde, l\u2019entr\u00e9e en sc\u00e8ne des tr\u00e8s attendus Radio Moscow se fait sous les vivats de la foule qui prend de plein fouet \u201dNew Beginning\u201d et ne va pas avoir le temps de souffler en encha\u00eenant entre autres \u201cSo Alone\u00bb et \u201cI Just Don&rsquo;t Know\u201d, qui d\u00e9verse des ondes 70&rsquo;s impeccables. Lunettes de soleil et veste en daim, Parker Griggs nous offre un joli flashback. Le gars est sid\u00e9rant de maturit\u00e9 et son jeu ainsi que sa voix ne trahissent rien de ses quelques trente piges et des poussi\u00e8res, un v\u00e9ritable routard du Heavy Psych.\u00a0 Pour le morceau \u00e0 l\u2019intro la plus bluesy \u201c250 Miles\/Brain Cycles\u201d le public se met imm\u00e9diatement \u00e0 taper dans ses mains pour accompagner le storytelling de Parker qui lance ses notes aigu\u00ebs \u00e0 la Clapton sur fond de ronron de basse.\u00a0 La vague enfle et finit par submerger le public &#8211; sans doute le meilleur moment de ce set au Hellfest o\u00f9 le public se met \u00e0 bouger jusqu&rsquo;au fond du chapiteau. Comme \u00e0 l&rsquo;accoutum\u00e9e le trio livre un set fort en \u00e9nergie o\u00f9 la gratte d\u00e9verse son flot de croches impossible \u00e0 compter. La basse n&rsquo;est pas en reste, m\u00eame si un poil d\u2019amplification suppl\u00e9mentaire n&rsquo;aurait rien g\u00e2ch\u00e9 (les balances sur la batterie et la basse sont un peu l\u00e9g\u00e8res sur le set&#8230;). Difficile d\u00e8s lors de ne pas consid\u00e9rer Radio Moscow comme un groupe pour guitariste. Les 40 minutes du set sont un format id\u00e9al pour ce spectacle, ne laissant pas le temps de s&rsquo;en lasser. On ne regrettera presque rien apr\u00e8s cette prestation si ce n\u2019est le manque de place dans la fosse&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a commen\u00e7ant par le replet \u00ab\u00a0Prosper on the Path\u00a0\u00bb, un beau b\u00e9b\u00e9 un peu criard issu de leur derni\u00e8re galette.\u00a0 Les grand britons y adjoignent un autre nouveau titre, \u00ab\u00a0Eye to Eye to Eye\u00a0\u00bb qui passe plut\u00f4t bien, avant d&rsquo;engager le puissant classique \u00ab\u00a0Throne of Fire\u00a0\u00bb. Niveau compos, peu de groupes de doom peuvent se targuer de projectiles si efficaces. Mais aujourd&rsquo;hui, quelque chose sonne un peu faux &#8211; litt\u00e9ralement. La mise en son pose soucis ; c&rsquo;est trop aigu, \u00e7a manque de basse, la guitare de Jon Davis manque de nerfs&#8230; Pour le chant de Davis, idem : nasillard, surnageant dans le mix, il distrait l&rsquo;oreille des esth\u00e8tes du doom qui pr\u00e9voyaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 de se craquer la nuque pendant quarante minutes. Ce \u00ab\u00a0Throne of Fire\u00a0\u00bb, habituellement garni d&rsquo;un monceau de gras et de quelques tranches de bitume chaud, se trouve donc aujourd&rsquo;hui propos\u00e9 en format r\u00e9gime di\u00e9t\u00e9tique, ce qui nous met la puce \u00e0 l&rsquo;oreille&#8230; Un peu plus loin le vieux \u00ab\u00a0Total Conquest\u00a0\u00bb se trouve un peu entach\u00e9 du m\u00eame mal&#8230; Volont\u00e9 du groupe ? Probl\u00e8me conjoncturel ? Toujours est-il que ce set de Conan, sans \u00eatre mauvais, est un peu pass\u00e9 \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a Leur joie de revenir honorer une si grande sc\u00e8ne est visible et le public a r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 l\u2019appel. Matte le bassiste communique beaucoup avec le public, le remerciant avec chaleur entre \u00ab Ephedra\u00bb et \u00ab Vayu\u00bb. Le ressenti est physique autant que spirituel : au pied de la sc\u00e8ne basse et batterie forment une onde de choc et les m\u00e9lodies port\u00e9es par le clavier de Norman plongent les festivaliers en transe. Le set livr\u00e9 au festival de l\u2019enfer est \u00e0 la fois chtonien et a\u00e9rien. Les \u00e9changes basse \/ guitare tout du long se font avec espi\u00e8glerie les deux acolytes se provoquant de mimiques et de grimaces amus\u00e9es. Quel bonheur de voir tant de gratitude dans le public et sur sc\u00e8ne alors que r\u00e9sonnent encore les derniers accords de \u00ab Hymn 72\u00bb. arpent\u00e9 tant de routes, partag\u00e9 tant de sc\u00e8nes de concerts et de festivals avec des groupes associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la Valley qu&rsquo;il para\u00eet logique de les retrouver aujourd&rsquo;hui ici. Mieux encore : \u00e0 l&rsquo;heure de l&rsquo;ap\u00e9ritif, et apr\u00e8s un d\u00e9but de journ\u00e9e d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9prouvant, une prestation plus cool et groovy s&rsquo;annonce parfaitement appropri\u00e9e. Sans extravagance, et avec le sourire (enfin en ce qui concerne C.M. Parks, les autres \u00e9tant plut\u00f4t du genre taciturnes), ils prennent la sc\u00e8ne et lancent leur intro sur le bon vieux \u00ab\u00a0Funeral for a Great Drunken Bird\u00a0\u00bb. Il ne faut pas longtemps pour constater que c\u00f4t\u00e9 set list le groupe est l\u00e0 pour convaincre le plus grand nombre et non pas pour prendre des risques : ils se reposent sur leurs plus gros classiques (les efficaces \u00ab\u00a0Alabaster\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a03-5-7\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Blood &amp; Sand (&#8230;)\u00a0\u00bb&#8230;) aux interpr\u00e9tations sans faille pour s\u00e9duire un public qui, pour beaucoup, n&rsquo;a encore jamais crois\u00e9 sa route. M\u00eame si deux ou trois extraits du r\u00e9cent (et plus calme) <em>ATW<\/em> sont jou\u00e9s, ce sont les plus vieux titres qui remportent la timbale. On notera en particulier un tr\u00e8s bon \u00ab\u00a0When God Comes Back\u00a0\u00bb qui permet \u00e9videmment \u00e0 Parks de valoriser le timbre parfois tr\u00e8s soul de ses vocaux, et \u00e0 Robby Staebler de se faire plaisir avec sa frappe de mule et son regard carnassier. Une s\u00e9rie de rendez-vous manqu\u00e9s, un split&#8230; Toujours est-il que dans l&rsquo;intervalle, le groupe s&rsquo;est reconstruit, s&rsquo;est densifi\u00e9 et affirm\u00e9 aussi, et c&rsquo;est une formation d&rsquo;une toute autre dimension qui se pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 nous sur un solennel et fi\u00e9vreux \u00ab\u00a0Walk On\u00a0\u00bb. L&rsquo;interpr\u00e9tation sans faille et incarn\u00e9e du quatuor emporte bien vite un public consentant, en particulier \u00e9videmment Joakim Nilsson, avec son timbre de voix toujours aux limites de la rupture (m\u00eame lorsqu&rsquo;il est un peu limite, son \u00e9nergie et sa puissance emportent l&rsquo;ensemble, \u00e0 l&rsquo;image d&rsquo;un tr\u00e8s bel encha\u00eenement \u00ab\u00a0Hisingen Blues\u00a0\u00bb \/ \u00ab\u00a0Uncomfortably Numb\u00a0\u00bb). Mais le blond frontman ne laisse pas que des miettes \u00e0 ses coll\u00e8gues, \u00e0 l&rsquo;image du chaleureux \u00ab\u00a0Bird of Paradise\u00a0\u00bb efficacement chant\u00e9 par le bassiste Truls M\u00f6rck. Notons par ailleurs le jeu de basse impeccable de ce dernier, en particulier quand il l\u00e2che son m\u00e9diator pour des parties interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es toutes en feeling. M\u00eame si la set list au final s&rsquo;av\u00e8re assez convenue et sans surprise, difficile de cracher dans la soupe, les torpilles qui s&rsquo;encha\u00eenent ayant fait des dizaines de fois la preuve de leur efficacit\u00e9, \u00e0 l&rsquo;image de ce final bluesy et \u00e9pique sur une \u00e9ni\u00e8me interpr\u00e9tation de \u00ab\u00a0The Siren\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p><a Autant dire que le contraste avec le style seventies pratiqu\u00e9 simultan\u00e9ment \u00e0 la Valley par Graveyard \u00e9tait saisissant. Les scandinaves ont foutu un boulet \u00e9norme dans l\u2019antre des amateurs de death metal qui se sont montr\u00e9 follement r\u00e9ceptifs aux assauts men\u00e9 par ce groupe aussi difficile \u00e0 caser dans un style particulier que talentueux. D\u00e9but\u00e9e avec une grosse intro sur \u00ab \u00c5penbaring \u00bb, le show de ces adeptes de sensations fortes a vu s\u2019encha\u00eener les hits redoutables que la formation venue du froid a mitonn\u00e9 au fil des ann\u00e9es, en mettant un accent fort sur <em>Meir<\/em> qui demeure un album que toute personne respectable se doit de poss\u00e9der. Apr\u00e8s avoir inflig\u00e9 aux spectateurs une version incendiaire de \u00ab Nekroskop\u00bb, accompagn\u00e9e par un circle pit du plus bel effet devant les crash barri\u00e8res, Kvelertak a marqu\u00e9 une pause (qui permit \u00e0 ses nombreux membres d\u2019\u00e9changer en toute d\u00e9contraction) en raison d\u2019un probl\u00e8me de son au niveau de la batterie. Les standards des trois albums officiels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s sans r\u00e9elle surprise et les festivaliers pr\u00e9sents ont appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 ce show d\u00e9sormais plus sobre que par le pass\u00e9 (certains artifices sc\u00e9niques ont disparu avec le d\u00e9part de l\u2019ancien vocaliste) et surtout plus plaisant que les premi\u00e8res parties pour Metallica jou\u00e9es sur un coin de sc\u00e8ne rikiki dans des stades devant un public pas vraiment venu l\u00e0 pour eux.\u00a0 C\u2019est convaincu par la pertinence du nouveau vocaliste ainsi que par une prestation au niveau escompt\u00e9 que nous quittons cette sc\u00e8ne pour aller nous r\u00e9fugier dans la Valley afin d\u2019attendre le d\u00e9but du show de l\u2019oncle acide.<\/p>\n<p><a Le groupe semble avoir plus de coh\u00e9sion que d&rsquo;habitude. L\u2019\u00e9nergie se fait sa place dans le public, le bassiste surexcit\u00e9 s&rsquo;oppose \u00e0 un guitariste neurasth\u00e9nique et r\u00e9sume peut \u00eatre assez bien la musique du groupe sur \u00ab Death&rsquo;s Door \u00bb. Uncle Acid d\u00e9clenche les premiers crowd surfing de la journ\u00e9e, il \u00e9tait temps ! M\u00eame si l\u2019agitation qui nait dans la foule est sans doute plus li\u00e9e \u00e0 la notori\u00e9t\u00e9 qu&rsquo;\u00e0 la puissance du set, on ne peut pas nier qu\u2019il se passe toujours quelque chose avec cette b\u00eate-l\u00e0. Incroyable que Kevin Starrs, qui se rend aussi anonyme par son attitude et son accoutrement, d\u00e9cha\u00eene tant de passion au-del\u00e0 de sa musique elle-m\u00eame. Comme toujours, il a enfil\u00e9 son costume de marionnettiste, cagoule mise \u00e0 part, et en jouant perp\u00e9tuellement \u00e0 contre-jour, ne trahit pas sa notori\u00e9t\u00e9.
