Le trio d\u2019Eugene, Oregon est d\u00e9sormais une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence en mati\u00e8re de doom caverneux aux pourtours souvent lumineux dont il est tr\u00e8s difficile de rendre compte avec de simples mots. Depuis <em>The Elaboration of Carbon<\/em>, chaque opus est une entit\u00e9 fig\u00e9e, rendant compte de la puissance \u00e9motionnelle que le doom peut charrier, blues d\u2019apocalypse ayant reconnu en Mike Scheidt la voix de son ma\u00eetre. <i>Catharsis<\/i>, <i>The Illusion Of Motion<\/i> ou <i>The Unreal Never Lived<\/i> sont autant de bijoux inclassables ne ressemblant \u00e0 nul autre, pas m\u00eame \u00e0 leur pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur. Pourtant, malgr\u00e9 une discographie sans faille, la notori\u00e9t\u00e9 de Yob est rest\u00e9e plut\u00f4t confidentielle les premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, amenant m\u00eame Scheidt \u00e0 prendre la d\u00e9cision de saborder son projet musical en 2006. Depuis sa sortie du coma trois ans plus tard, le trio b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019un regain de popularit\u00e9 notable et encha\u00eene les festivals et prestations dantesques au Roadburn, refuge \u00e9vident des plus grands groupes de doom et affili\u00e9, o\u00f9 les natifs la bande \u00e0 Mike Scheidt, d\u00e9sormais \u00e9paul\u00e9 par Aaron Rieseberg et Travis Foster, sera toujours le bienvenu. Cela \u00e9tant, le nouveau trio cherche toujours a graver sur disque une preuve sonore aussi \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 aussi \u00e9vidente que ce que la premi\u00e8re mouture du combo avait propos\u00e9. En effet, si <i>The Great Cessation <\/i>et <i>Atma<\/i>\u00a0comportent quelques titres dont l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 live n\u2019est pas \u00e0 discuter, l\u2019\u00e9preuve du temps n\u2019aura pas permis \u00e0 ces deux disques de se hisser \u00e0 la hauteur des standards de la premi\u00e8re p\u00e9riode. Sentant pourtant qu\u2019il traverse une p\u00e9riode cr\u00e9atrice prolifique, Mike Scheidt multiplie, \u00e0 partir de 2012, les collaborations et side project, inscrivant son nom dans les livrets d\u2019albums de Lumbar, Red Fang, Vh\u00f6L ainsi que dans celui d\u2019un hommage \u00e0 Townes Van Zant,\u00a0 tout \u00e7a sans compter le temps que lui a pris le travail sur la r\u00e9\u00e9dition de <em>Catharsis<\/em> chez Profound Lore. C\u2019est dans cette atmosph\u00e8re riche qu\u2019il s\u2019att\u00e8le \u00e0 la composition du septi\u00e8me album de Yob, \u00e0 jamais le grand projet de sa vie.<\/p>\n<p>Publi\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019or\u00e9e de leur \u00e9norme tourn\u00e9e de 6 semaines en Europe, cet opus est en tout point magistral\u00a0: compos\u00e9 de quatre titres dantesques \u00e0 la palette \u00e9motionnelle vari\u00e9e, <i>Clearing the Path To Ascend<\/i> est enfin l\u2019album de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence attendu depuis presque dix ans. Si \u00ab\u00a0In Our Blood\u00a0\u00bb qui commence le disque est un titre classique dans la droite lign\u00e9e des habituels morceaux d\u2019ouverture de Yob (\u00ab\u00a0Aeons\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Ball Of Molten Lead\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Burning the Altar\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Quantum Mystic\u00a0\u00bb etc.), lente descente dans les contr\u00e9es doom magnifi\u00e9e par la voix suraig\u00fce de Mike Scheidt, \u00ab\u00a0Nothing to Win\u00a0\u00bb, le titre suivant est de loin le plus violent de la discographie du combo. Ouvert par un riff rappelant Morbid Angel, il maintient tout du long une tension \u00e9norme, ne s\u2019a\u00e9rant que le temps d\u2019un pr\u00e9-refrain dantesque. La suite semble montrer la nouvelle voie que s\u2019en va explorer Yob\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Unmask The Spectre\u00a0\u00bb hypnotise par sa sensibilit\u00e9 toute en lourdeur, glissant quelques plans grunge dans cette perfection prog\/doom, continuant \u00e0 explorer un peu ce que <i>The Illusion of Motion<\/i> avait initi\u00e9, prenant ce qu\u2019il faut chez Neurosis et l\u2019emportant plus loin sur le chemin du metal sombre. Mais la vraie r\u00e9ussite de cet opus le cl\u00f4t\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Marrow\u00a0\u00bb (moelle) n\u2019est rien d\u2019autre qu\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de pr\u00e8s de 20 minutes dont la perfection en mati\u00e8re de sensibilit\u00e9 et de puissance est saisissante. Tr\u00e8s Neurosienne dans sa composition, elle transpire pourtant par tous les ports la spiritualit\u00e9 de Scheidt (ce dernier est tr\u00e8s port\u00e9 sur la culture bouddhiste et les arts m\u00e9ditatifs). L\u2019ajout de quelques nappes d\u2019orgue (jou\u00e9es par Billy Barnett, technicien qui a enregistr\u00e9 les derniers opus du groupe) \u00a0donne un relief m\u00e9lancolique suppl\u00e9mentaire au spleen v\u00e9hicul\u00e9 par ce titre, cl\u00f4turant l\u2019un des albums de la d\u00e9cennie. Simplement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Point Vinyle :<\/em><\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est \u00e0 Relapse Records qu\u2019il \u00e9choit de publier la version vinyle du disque. Le travail est remarquable, contenant des impressions m\u00e9talliques dor\u00e9es (les 3 lunes) sur la pochette, la tranche, et la back pochette, petite attention permettant d\u2019appr\u00e9cier \u00e0 sa juste valeur le magnifique travail de design d\u2019Orion Landau (l\u2019un des boss de Relapse Records, ayant un nom \u00e0 figurer dans Star Wars).
