La production solo foisonnante de Brant Bjork sur la premi\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie du pr\u00e9sent mill\u00e9naire nous avait habitu\u00e9 \u00e0 voir le bonhomme dans le paysage musical, toujours actif, l\u00e0, dans un coin. Discret, toutefois, avec des sorties qui passaient souvent presque inaper\u00e7ues : petits labels, distribution inexistante, tourn\u00e9es de petites salles\u2026 Lorsque Kyuss Lives !<\/em> vient rappeler Bjork \u00e0 son pass\u00e9 de batteur, c’est presque avec surprise qu’on avait not\u00e9 son enthousiasme \u00e0 battre la mesure derri\u00e8re ce all-star band (et donc dispara\u00eetre un peu de la lumi\u00e8re, apr\u00e8s tant d’ann\u00e9es en tant que leader d’un solo band \u00e0 g\u00e9om\u00e9trie variable). La dynamique qui pousse le groupe de tourn\u00e9e en tourn\u00e9e, allant m\u00eame jusqu’\u00e0 sortir un album tr\u00e8s visible l’an dernier, semble s\u00e9duire le californien (les revenus associ\u00e9s n’y sont sans doute pas \u00e9trangers\u2026), et la chute est donc rude lorsque John Garcia annonce il y a quelques mois qu’il ne compte pas donner suite pour le moment \u00e0 Vista Chino<\/em>. Comme il \u00e9tait pr\u00e9visible, Bjork trouve un rebond salvateur \u00e0 travers la sortie d’un nouvel album solo, ce Black Flower Power<\/em>. Il aura gagn\u00e9 dans l’op\u00e9ration une visibilit\u00e9 in\u00e9dite (label important, tourn\u00e9es de headliner dans des salles plus grandes, etc\u2026).<\/p>\n

Ce n’est pas toujours un clich\u00e9 que de dire que le premier titre de l’album en \u00ab\u00a0donne le ton\u00a0\u00bb, tr\u00e8s souvent. Et tr\u00e8s rarement ce fut autant le cas que sur ce disque, o\u00f9 la premi\u00e8re minute de \u00ab\u00a0Controllers Destroyed\u00a0\u00bb contient tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments cl\u00e9s qui peuvent d\u00e9finir ce disque : \u00e7a commence par un riff compl\u00e8tement sabbathien, encha\u00een\u00e9 \u00e0 un break basse-batterie venu de nulle part qui envoie un groove remarquable, portant la signature embl\u00e9matique du grand fris\u00e9 au bandana. Le reste du titre est \u00e0 l’avenant et prolonge cette sorte d’ambivalence int\u00e9ressante, sans en faire le titre de l’ann\u00e9e non plus. Cette tendance heavy est en tous les cas un des points saillants de ce disque. Le reste de l’album nous rappelle ce qu’on aime et que l’on aime moins chez Brant Bjork, \u00e0 savoir, pour r\u00e9sumer, une cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 remarquable, un feeling impeccable (ses soli sont toujours int\u00e9ressants, sans pour autant relever d’une technique incroyable), mais aussi\u2026 un l\u00e9ger manque de coh\u00e9rence, que l’on fera volontiers passer pour un exc\u00e8s de fantaisie tout \u00e0 fait symptomatique chez Bjork (et qui contribue au charme du bonhomme, avouons-le).<\/p>\n

Ainsi, certaines compos sont un peu moyennes, tandis que d’autres se distinguent plus favorablement, \u00e0 l’image de \u00ab\u00a0Stokely Up Now\u00a0\u00bb qui s’articule autour d’un riff Bjorkien typique, et propose un break-boogie court mais bon sur sa fin. On notera aussi le heavy et fuzz\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Boogie Woogie On Your Brain\u00a0\u00bb, la fin de \u00ab\u00a0Ain’t No Runnin'\u00a0\u00bb ou le plus-Bjork-ien-tu-meurs<\/em> \u00ab\u00a0That’s A Fact Jack\u00a0\u00bb\u2026<\/p>\n

Deux titres \u00ab\u00a0bonus\u00a0\u00bb viennent compl\u00e9ter cette galette (heureusement, sinon elle durerait moins de 35 min\u2026), un long blues r\u00e9pondant au nom de\u2026 \u00ab\u00a0Hustler’s Blues\u00a0\u00bb (!) dont la deuxi\u00e8me moiti\u00e9 remplie de soli bien groovy ne manque pas d’int\u00e9r\u00eat, et un instrumental, \u00ab\u00a0Where You From, Man ?\u00a0\u00bb, qui devrait ravir les stoner-heads les plus traditionnels, avec son desert rock de la meilleure facture et ses jams fuzz\u00e9es \u00e0 rallonge sur huit minutes.<\/p>\n

A l’heure des bilans, on est (comme souvent avec Brant Bjork) un peu partag\u00e9 : Black Flower Power<\/em> est un bon album (pas son meilleur toutefois), et il comporte \u00e0 la fois des initiatives audacieuses et des plans dont nous \u00e9tions tr\u00e8s (trop ?) coutumiers sur ses r\u00e9alisations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes. On est contents de retrouver le bonhomme, en forme qui plus est, et de noter que sa cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 n’a pas p\u00e2ti de ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es o\u00f9 il est rest\u00e9 assis derri\u00e8re un kit de batterie \u00e0 jouer essentiellement des vieux morceaux. Maintenant, comme on se le dit \u00e0 chaque fois, il nous tarde d’entendre l’album qu’on le sent capable d’\u00e9crire, celui de l’\u00e9vidence et de la cons\u00e9cration. Mais les ann\u00e9es passent, et il se cantonne \u00e0 encha\u00eener les bons albums. C’est d\u00e9j\u00e0 pas si mal en soi, et certains groupes pourraient d\u00e9j\u00e0 se satisfaire d’une telle tendance…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
