Pas un album \u00e0 mettre entre toutes les mains, certainement, difficile \u00e0 dig\u00e9rer pour certains, il jetait en tous les cas un pav\u00e9 dans la mare un peu stagnante du genre musical. Tout juste deux ans plus tard, le trio nous revient avec ce <em>Pagan Science<\/em>, deuxi\u00e8me album, donc, toujours chez Riding Easy.<\/p>\n<p>Toujours pas une once de compromission \u00e0 l\u2019horizon, The Well trace sa route, et approfondit m\u00eame le sillon : le groupe \u00e9volue toujours dans cet \u00ab entre-deux-mondes \u00bb difficile \u00e0 cerner, entre rythmiques langoureuses et morceaux percutants, des plans de gratte metal sournoisement fuzz\u00e9s, tout en subtilit\u00e9, des riffs sanglants enrob\u00e9s d\u2019atours de production chiad\u00e9s\u2026 Insondable en premi\u00e8re approche, mais constant dans la d\u00e9marche, ind\u00e9boulonnables m\u00eame quand ils enquillent onze titres (dix et demi plut\u00f4t) dans la m\u00eame veine, pour une rondelle de trois quarts d\u2018heure riche et mastoc, qui ne laisse aucune place au remplissage. Ils s\u2019approprient m\u00eame l\u2019emballant \u00ab Guineverre \u00bb de Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash, qui devient par leur entremise une conclusion classieuse, d\u00e9licieusement dark et sournoise \u00e0 leur opus.<\/p>\n<p>Pour distinguer Pagan Science de son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, on mettra d\u2019abord en avant cette coh\u00e9rence stylistique r\u00e9-affirm\u00e9e, de plus en plus ma\u00eetris\u00e9e et assum\u00e9e. Cette approche les met \u00e0 l\u2019abri de la moindre comparaison, \u00e9tiquette ou autres rapprochements d\u2019influences. On devra aussi reconna\u00eetre au groupe une qualit\u00e9 de composition de haut niveau, probablement pour partie li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019exp\u00e9rience sc\u00e9nique accumul\u00e9e ces derniers mois. Dans les faits, \u00e7a riffe dru (\u00ab Skybound \u00bb, \u00ab Drug from the banks \u00bb\u2026), et le travail de structuration m\u00e9lodique est probant (\u00ab Byzantine \u00bb, \u00ab A Pilgrimage \u00bb\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>On est toujours autant bluff\u00e9 de constater la profondeur du son et l\u2019\u00e9laboration du travail de production \u00eatre l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019un \u00ab simple \u00bb trio (bon, il y a des lignes de guitare doubl\u00e9es, \u00e0 voir le rendu live\u2026), encore moins d\u2019un trio de texans (difficile de projeter le clich\u00e9s de vulgaires rednecks \u00e9voluer dans une veine aussi classieuse). Autre ravissement auditif, la syst\u00e9matisation des vocaux travaill\u00e9s \u00e0 deux voix (masculin \/ f\u00e9minin, l\u2019\u0153uvre du guitariste Ian Graham et de la bassiste Lisa Alley) reste l\u2019une des signatures du groupe : ch\u0153urs, alternance, harmonies, tout y passe, avec \u00e0 chaque fois un rendu final absolument in\u00e9dit.<\/p>\n<p>Bref, nul doute que le stoner rac\u00e9 et \u00e9l\u00e9gant du trio texan ne laissera toujours personne indiff\u00e9rent : les amateurs exclusifs de son brut, d\u2019\u00e9nergie primale et de gros riffs qui t\u00e2chent n\u2019y trouveront sans doute pas leur bonheur. Les autres, patients et ouverts \u00e0 d\u2019autres horizons musicaux, devraient \u00eatre r\u00e9ceptifs aux compos de The Well, qui nous propose avec ce<em> Pagan Science<\/em> rien moins que son meilleur album \u00e0 ce jour (une conclusion un peu h\u00e2tive et gratuite pour un groupe qui ne compte que deux albums au compteur, j\u2019en conviens).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Le premier album de The Well nous avait bien marqu\u00e9, par son audace, son int\u00e9grit\u00e9, son originalit\u00e9.
