Votre serviteur reconna\u00eet sans ambig\u00fcit\u00e9 mais aussi sans grand enthousiasme le talent de Desert Storm, ce combo anglais de gros stoner metal \u2013 plus metal que stoner finalement \u2013 aux pointes sludge \u00e9nerv\u00e9es, que ce soit en live ou sur album. Le groupe est bon, et, m\u00eame s\u2019il n\u2019est pas des plus innovants, il s\u2019av\u00e8re solide ; une valeur s\u00fbre pour r\u00e9pondre au pied lev\u00e9 \u00e0 tout besoin de headbanging. La perspective d\u2019\u00e9couter le side project de la moiti\u00e9 de ses membres (les fr\u00e8res Cole, guitariste et batteur de Desert Storm) n\u2019apparaissait donc pas forc\u00e9ment comme des plus excitantes a priori\u2026 et pourtant, ce LP est rapidement apparu comme une v\u00e9ritable bouff\u00e9e d\u2019air frais dans une p\u00e9riode de production musicale plut\u00f4t morne.<\/p>\n

Figurez-vous que les gars s’att\u00e8lent \u00e0 creuser un sillon un peu en d\u00e9perdition : celui du stoner ! Et oui, d\u00e9sormais la plus large part de la production musicale affili\u00e9e de pr\u00e8s ou de loin au genre prend des chemins de traverse : retro-proto-rock par l\u00e0, psych-rock un peu \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, et un peu plus loin doom, sludge, en se rapprochant des sentiers goudronn\u00e9s du post-rock… Mais qui fait encore du stoner de nos jours ? Plus grand monde. D\u00e9laissant un peu les vell\u00e9it\u00e9s nerveuses de Desert Storm, les frangins Cole s’associent donc \u00e0 deux potes issus d’un autre groupe d’Oxford (Mother Corona) pour finir de compl\u00e9ter le line up de ce side-project, et se d\u00e9dier \u00e0 leur exploitation des sons fuzz\u00e9s, des riffs plomb\u00e9s et de l’odeur du sable chaud.<\/p>\n

Le r\u00e9sultat est une belle galette de dix titres bien gaul\u00e9s, qui rappelleront \u00e9videmment Kyuss (le chant sur \u00ab\u00a0Eschaton\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0No Man’s Land\u00a0\u00bb est un v\u00e9ritable ersatz de John Garcia, ce qui n’est pas forc\u00e9ment le cas sur le reste de l’album, ne g\u00e9n\u00e9ralisons pas) et les meilleures formations de l’axe US\/UK (et certaines formations scandinaves) du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000. La plupart des compos ont un haut facteur accrocheur et seront fredonn\u00e9es par l’auditeur bienveillant au bout de deux ou trois \u00e9coutes \u00e0 peine. Pour la forme, on mettra quand m\u00eame en avant quelques morceaux plus marquants, comme le couplet groovy de \u00ab\u00a0Black Spiral\u00a0\u00bb, la ligne de basse et le riff massue du tr\u00e8s fat \u00ab\u00a0Explode\u00a0\u00bb, l’instrumental \u00ab\u00a0Significant\u00a0\u00bb…<\/p>\n

Bref, The Grand Mal, en toute discr\u00e9tion et presque humilit\u00e9, propose un album de stoner tr\u00e8s qualitatif, ce qui de nos jours est presque devenu une anomalie musicale. Pas ancr\u00e9 dans des codes trop fermes, ils y adjoignent le meilleur de leurs diff\u00e9rentes exp\u00e9riences musicales et groupes \u00ab\u00a0parents\u00a0\u00bb, pour rendre l’ensemble vari\u00e9, moderne, et vivifiant. L’ensemble est probablement imparfait et certains titres moins fringants que d’autres… Mais le retour sur investissement est au rendez-vous apr\u00e8s seulement une poign\u00e9e d’\u00e9coutes.
