Touche-\u00e0-tout instrumentistes, les deux musiciens ont \u00e9crit et enregistr\u00e9 seuls leur deuxi\u00e8me album,<em> The Ocean<\/em> (m\u00eame si un troisi\u00e8me musicien vient d&rsquo;\u00eatre recrut\u00e9 par le duo, vraisemblablement pour leur permettre de donner quelques concerts &#8211; tout au moins l&rsquo;esp\u00e9rons-nous). Deux ans apr\u00e8s leur premier album, originalement appel\u00e9 <em>Fostermother<\/em>, ce second disque, cette fois sign\u00e9 chez Ripple, vient enfoncer le clou.<\/p>\n<p>La musique du duo est une sorte de stoner doom tr\u00e8s fuzz\u00e9 et tr\u00e8s m\u00e9lodique, tr\u00e8s travaill\u00e9 aussi (gros travail du son, avec notamment un travail de production convaincant). On pense souvent aux talentueux Mars Red Sky (\u00e9coutez les couplets de \u00ab\u00a0Hedonist\u00a0\u00bb en particulier) pour le contraste entre une base instrumentale lourde mais m\u00e9lodique, et un chant clair et hant\u00e9. Loin du plagiat, Fostermother trouve sa voie dans ce segment musical peu explor\u00e9, caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par un vrai travail d&rsquo;\u00e9criture qui fait rentrer ses m\u00e9lodies au forceps dans nos petits cr\u00e2nes apr\u00e8s seulement quelques \u00e9coutes. L&rsquo;ensemble est plut\u00f4t lent, voire mid-tempo, et explore m\u00e9ticuleusement, sur 45 minutes, cette \u00e9troite fronti\u00e8re entre lourdeur et subtilit\u00e9. De plus, les compositions parviennent \u00e0 jumeler un travail de structure tr\u00e8s \u00e9labor\u00e9 (les chansons sont denses, roboratives m\u00eame, charg\u00e9es en riffs, refrains, breaks&#8230;) et une dur\u00e9e (relativement) courte, avec un seul titre au dessus de 6 minutes. Tant et si bien que l&rsquo;ennui n&rsquo;est jamais l\u00e0, et les \u00e9coutes peuvent se succ\u00e9der avec toujours une petite surprise au d\u00e9tour d&rsquo;un riff d\u00e9ja engramm\u00e9 depuis longtemps, ou un refrain d\u00e9j\u00e0 chantonn\u00e9 apr\u00e8s seulement trois ou quatre \u00e9coutes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Toute autant audacieuse que s\u00e9duisante, la musique de Fostermother a pas mal d&rsquo;atouts pour plaire largement.
