Voir un groupe fran\u00e7ais rejoindre les rangs \u00e9litistes de l’un des principaux labels stoner mondiaux, Small Stone Records, nous aura rendu heureux et fiers. Que de chemin parcouru en quelques petites ann\u00e9es, depuis le sympathique combo Alcohsonic qui arpentait les clubs avec son album sous le bras, jusqu’\u00e0 ce Abrahma \u00ab\u00a0adulte\u00a0\u00bb, s\u00fbr de lui… Quoi qu’il en soit, quelques mois apr\u00e8s l’effet d’annonce, la galette tombe enfin dans notre platine, et il est temps de trancher : d\u00e9sillusion ou essai transform\u00e9 ?…<\/p>\n

Difficile en premier lieu de synth\u00e9tiser cet album, de le r\u00e9sumer \u00e0 une trame unique, lin\u00e9aire. L’album commence par une s\u00e9rie de morceaux assez \u00ab\u00a0catchy\u00a0\u00bb, aux structures efficaces et robustes. \u00ab\u00a0Neptune of sorrow\u00a0\u00bb en intro donne le ton, port\u00e9 par un refrain remarquable, pas trop loin d’un Dozer des grands jours. L’encha\u00eenement avec \u00ab\u00a0tears of the sun\u00a0\u00bb, morceau un peu plus a\u00e9rien mais toujours plomb\u00e9 par cette chape guitaristique \u00e9touffante (quel son…) est r\u00e9ussi. Plus l\u00e9ger encore (ouais, tout est relatif, hein…), \u00ab\u00a0Dandelion dust\u00a0\u00bb abat un refrain impeccable, port\u00e9 par un lick de guitare cristallin qui donne au titre toute son \u00e9vidence : sans cet arrangement superbement trouv\u00e9, le morceau aurait-il eu cette identit\u00e9 ? Le reste de l’album est \u00e0 l’avenant : le diable est dans les d\u00e9tails, dit-on, rien de plus vrai ici, avec un soin apport\u00e9 aux arrangements et gimmicks sonores tout \u00e0 fait cruciaux. Une qualit\u00e9 rarement mise en avant par les groupes hexagonaux… Illustration encore sur le refrain en choeur de \u00ab\u00a0Honkin’ water roof\u00a0\u00bb, refrain encore port\u00e9 par une ligne de guitare a\u00e9rienne en fond, qui transcende le riff pachydermique du morceau. A noter, autre denr\u00e9e rare dans la production \u00ab\u00a0contemporaine\u00a0\u00bb, que le morceau se termine par un instru de space rock qui vire au solo de gratte s\u00e9l\u00e9nite… Miam !<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s un petit interm\u00e8de instru, l’album prend un tournant plus \u00ab\u00a0grave\u00a0\u00bb, plus m\u00fbr en tout cas (ce qui ne faisait pourtant pas d\u00e9faut aux premiers morceaux !). Ainsi \u00ab\u00a0Vodun Pt.1…\u00a0\u00bb dont les couplets feront penser aux \u0153uvres de Dave Angstrom (Supafuzz en t\u00eate) tourne vite au refrain le plus accrocheur de l’album. Et toujours cette guitare a\u00e9rienne juste derri\u00e8re dans le mix qui vient apporter relief et subtilit\u00e9 \u00e0 cette arm\u00e9e de cordes accord\u00e9es trop bas… Et encore un soli anti-d\u00e9monstratif impeccable… Arrive \u00ab\u00a0Big Black Cloud\u00a0\u00bb, morceau hyp\u00e9 depuis plusieurs mois, lorsque l’on a su qu’il accueillait les talents du space guitariste ultime Ed Mundell. Un Mundell qui vient effectivement coller quelques soli sur-fuzz\u00e9s sur des passages taill\u00e9s sur mesure… \u00ab\u00a0Headless Horse\u00a0\u00bb, comme son nom le laisse pr\u00e9sager, nous am\u00e8ne en terrain lugubre, pour un titre de \u00ab\u00a0space-doom\u00a0\u00bb dont le son de basse nous rappelle avec nostalgie celui de Peter Steele.
\nEncore un interm\u00e8de presque instru, \u00e0 la slide cette fois, du Ry Cooder dans le texte… Au moment o\u00f9 arrive \u00ab\u00a0Vodun Pt. 3\u00a0\u00bb, on a d\u00e9j\u00e0 mang\u00e9 50 minutes de d\u00e9cibels bien gras dans la face, et on ne s’attend plus \u00e0 une nouvelle d\u00e9flagration… Le morceau est vari\u00e9, rythm\u00e9, tout \u00e0 la fois rapeux et cristalin. Mais rien \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du tortueux \u00ab\u00a0The maze\u00a0\u00bb, le bien nomm\u00e9 : cette pi\u00e8ce de bravoure de 10 minutes, construit une ambiance t\u00e9n\u00e9breuse et froide, un peu \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d’un Year Of No Light. M\u00eame s’il aurait pu perdre quelques minutes, ce titre ambitieux tient ses promesses. J’ai plus de r\u00e9serve sur le quelque peu chaotique \u00ab\u00a0Omega\u00a0\u00bb qui vient cl\u00f4turer de mani\u00e8re un peu brouillonne plus d’1h10 de musique.<\/p>\n

Pour pr\u00e9parer cette chronique, je me suis rendu compte que j’ai d\u00fb \u00e9couter cet album une bonne vingtaine de fois. Au moins deux fois plus que n’importe quel album que je suis amen\u00e9 \u00e0 chroniquer g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement. Au d\u00e9but, j’ai pens\u00e9 que j’avais juste du mal \u00e0 le \u00ab\u00a0cerner\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e0 d\u00e9finir son p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre, sa \u00ab\u00a0matrice\u00a0\u00bb. Ensuite, j’ai remarqu\u00e9 que ce qui me faisait \u00e9couter l’album \u00e0 nouveau \u00e0 chaque fois est ce sentiment de \u00ab\u00a0nouveaut\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb qui restait bien pr\u00e9sent, aliment\u00e9 par cette production somptueuse, ces gimmicks, ces compos aventureuses, ces surprises entendues \u00e0 chaque \u00e9coute. Je ne m’en lasse toujours pas. Mais au final, je r\u00e9alise que si je l’ai tant \u00e9cout\u00e9, c’est avant tout parce que c’est un foutrement bon album, et que chaque \u00e9coute me le fait appr\u00e9cier un peu plus.
