Ce jeudi 6 avril, Garmonbozia organisait au Backstage By the Mill \u00e0 Paris une soir\u00e9e \u00e0 ne manquer sous aucun pr\u00e9texte, puisqu’elle r\u00e9unissait Deathrite<\/strong> et surtout Mantar<\/strong>, un des meilleurs groupes live de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, si ce n’est du si\u00e8cle, oui Monsieur. Ajoutons \u00e0 cela deux excellents albums sortis en 2014 et 2016. La liste s’allonge et les absents commencent \u00e0 se bouffer les doigts. Calmez-vous, on vous raconte tout ci-dessous.<\/p>\n

Les allemands de Deathrite<\/strong> ouvrent la soir\u00e9e en toute violence avec sa guitare crado, ses blasts et ses vocaux caverneux. Comme vous pouvez vous le figurer, Deathrite ne fait pas dans la dentelle mais plut\u00f4t dans le death old school. On pense aux groupes de la vague swedish death metal genre Entombed ou Dismember, avec ce son particuli\u00e8rement moche et caract\u00e9ristique de la fameuse p\u00e9dale HM2, avec un penchant assez punk. Deathrite ins\u00e8re aussi quelques passages plus lents et plus lourds, qui ajoutent un peu de morbidit\u00e9 \u00e0 l’ensemble. Seul b\u00e9mol, le jeu sc\u00e9nique du groupe n’est pas franchement folichon et enjaillant. Sur ce genre de musique, on s’attend quand m\u00eame \u00e0 un peu plus d’\u00e9nergie et autre chose que \u00ab\u00a0je l\u00e8ve mon pied de micro, je le repose, puis je le rel\u00e8ve, yeah, vive le rock \u00bb. Musicalement, on pourrait se demander quel rapport il y a avec Mantar, qui \u00e9volue dans un registre compl\u00e8tement diff\u00e9rent, et c’est finalement tant mieux. On a souvent l’habitude d’avoir des groupes assez similaires \u00e0 l’affiche d’une m\u00eame soir\u00e9e, mais ce soir on est bien content de se faire r\u00e9veiller par le death grind de Deathrite.<\/p>\n

La salle commence \u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 bien remplie lorsqu’arrive le tour de Mantar<\/strong>, entit\u00e9 mal\u00e9fique et cingl\u00e9e n\u00e9e de la fusion de Hanno Kl\u00e4rhardt et Erin\u00e7 Sakarya. Comme d’habitude, les deux bonhommes anticipent les litres de sueur qu’ils s’appr\u00eatent \u00e0 perdre et arrivent torse poil avant d’entamer \u00ab\u00a0Cult Witness\u00a0\u00bb. Mantar en live ne se fout pas de toi\u00a0: ce groupe ne joue pas de la musique mais la vit et l’incarne.<\/p>\n

La crasse des morceaux occupe la chair des membres, surtout celui du guitariste chanteur. Le filiforme Hanno d\u00e9forme son corps \u00e9lastique pour adopter les positions les plus tortueuses et inconfortables, il s’\u00e9crase contre le mur, se plie en deux accroupi au sol, se crispe, se raidit. Face \u00e0 lui se dresse Erin\u00e7 et son physique d’armoire normande, qui soutient le regard de Hanno tout en menant \u00e0 mal ses f\u00fbts. La tension entre les deux membres est saisissante.<\/p>\n

Tous les deux se livrent litt\u00e9ralement corps et \u00e2me \u00e0 leur musique et quittent leurs r\u00f4les d\u2019interpr\u00e8tes pour devenir les victimes du monstre qu’ils ont cr\u00e9e. Forc\u00e9ment, une interpr\u00e9tation aussi spectaculaire a des retomb\u00e9es sur le public, qui se d\u00e9chaine crescendo au fil des morceaux : \u00ab\u00a0Cross the Cross\u00a0\u00bb qui nous rappelle les meilleurs riffs de Black Cobra, \u00ab\u00a0Sundowning\u00a0\u00bb qui permet \u00e0 Erin\u00e7 d’achever compl\u00e8tement sa batterie, ou le tubesque \u00ab\u00a0Era Borealis\u00a0\u00bb o\u00f9 toute la foule reprendra ensemble le refrain. Une heure de set et le groupe est d\u00e9j\u00e0 parti. On attend un rappel, en vain. Dommage.<\/p>\n

Deathrite a ouvert les hostilit\u00e9s d’une mani\u00e8re plus qu’honorable et Mantar n’a pas failli \u00e0 sa r\u00e9putation. Une telle prestation dans une salle intimiste comme le Backstage By The Mill fait rentrer la soir\u00e9e au panth\u00e9on des meilleurs concerts auxquels j’ai pu assister, sans exag\u00e9ration. Le set de Mantar est tout de m\u00eame pass\u00e9 tr\u00e8s vite et on aurait volontiers termin\u00e9 sur un rappel, mais tant pis.
